SUMMARY:CAFL's Issue Spotting Training
DESCRIPTION:The Temporary Custody Hearing just ended. DCF has been awarded Temporary Custody. What do you do now? Identifying the potential issues in the case is a critical step for developing a comprehensive case plan. Join us for this zoom training designed to assist you in ferreting out the key issues in your cases. We start with a new\, completely original CAFL hypothetical. And it is packed with issues. Your homework is to read the hypothetical and watch a short video. Then join us on May 21 for the Zoom training. After a brief introduction\, we will break into small groups where we can unpack the issues presented in the hypothetical. When we rejoin the large group\, we will compare lists and discuss how to use this list in your case planning. \nLimited spots available! \nNOTE: 3 CLE credit for each webinar for attorneys on each of the following panels: CAFL\, CAFL Appeals. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUlcu6orzwsHtEBf9TU3yceInugH57scVE9

SUMMARY:Understanding & Litigating the Harms of Child Removal Training
DESCRIPTION:Understanding & Litigating the Harms of Child Removal \nBecause There’s No Place Like Home \nThe involuntary separation of children from their parents is devastating for the whole family\, inevitably causing distinct and long-term harms to the children and to their parents. This two-part training will offer a deeper dive into these harms and explore what we can do to improve outcomes for our clients. \nPart 1: May 14\, 2024\, 2:00-4:00pm \nThousands of children are separated from their families every year in the name of “child welfare.” In this session\, Professor Shanta Trivedi (author of “The Harm of Child Removal” and the forthcoming article “‘Am I Still a Parent?’ The Devastating Effects of Family Policing on Parents”) will examine the harms that children and parents experience in the family regulation system\, and discuss strategies to help practitioners identify\, prevent and/or mitigate these harms. You can learn more about Professor Trivedi here. Register here. \nPart 2: May 23\, 2024\, 2:00-4:00pm \nCustody decisions aren’t just about the parents and their conduct; the court also must consider the harm to the child from removal\, family separation\, and placement in the foster system. Our judges don’t always agree\, though. In this session we will discuss the relevant legal requirements in Massachusetts\, share practice tips\, and introduce resources the working group has developed to help attorneys litigate the harms of removal. Register here. \nThis program is presented by The CAFL Harms of Removal Working Group. Each session is approved for 2 CAFL CLEs. Attendance at both sessions is encouraged but is not required. \nNOTE: 4 CLE credit for each webinar for attorneys on each of the following panels: CAFL\, CAFL Appeals

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cheri Beasley\, Former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice \nDate: May 13\, 2024 1:00-3:00pm; Remote & In Person Event \nThe Dred Scott decision said “They Have no rights that we must value.” Throughout the history of our country the value placed on the individual rights of individuals with specific identities has shifted. Today we are in the midst of another shift. How do we\, as public defenders\, charged with championing the rights of the indigent and often\, the people from marginalized communities\, ensure that the individuality of our clients and ourselves are celebrated in our work. Our speaker will inspire us to be bold in our advocacy and dedicated to our core values.

Managerial Essentials are taught in MLP I.  MLP II is an advanced program in Managerial Excellence.  We are now accepting applications for MLP II (see end of post).  Although MLP I is generally a prerequisite for MLP II\, senior leaders and seasoned managers may attend MLP II without completing MLP I.  Space in the program is limited.  Applications are to be emailed to hsmith@publiccounsel.net and are due on or before 5 p.m. on January 15\, 2024. \nMLP II Program Goals \nThis program is designed to develop skills to enhance managerial excellence and to help you become a more effective leader. It will enable you to: \n\n Understand your impact on others;\n Adapt your leadership style;\n Improve your influencing skills;\n Communicate effectively;\n Build commitment to a shared vision;\n Foster collaboration and build high performing teams;\n Accelerate decision making;\n Prioritize and deliver results;\n Be your personal best and inspire your team members to be their best;\n Lead change; and\n Shape the desired culture.\n\nProgram Details \nThe program consists of seven classes:  a full day in person kick off followed by 6 zoom sessions.  Attendees are expected to attend all sessions so please review the dates below to confirm your availability prior to applying. \n\nPrework: Prior to the start of the program\, you will be assigned background reading.  You will be asked to identify your own leadership challenges and complete a DiSC assessment.\nAttendance:  Participants will be expected to attend all seven classes.  Applicants should block the following dates:\n\n\nJanuary 29\,  2024   10 a.m.-4 p.m. (THIS DATE IS CANCELLED)\n\n\nFeb 15\, 2024               9 a.m. to 12 p.m. via zoom\n\n\nMar 4\, 2024                9 a.m. to 12 p.m. via zoom\nMar 18\, 2024              9 a.m. to 12 p.m. via zoom\nApr 4\, 2024                 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. via zoom (formerly Apr 8\, 2024)\nApr 25\, 2024               9 a.m. to 12 p.m. via zoom\nMay 9\, 2024                9 a.m. to 12 p.m. via zoom\n\n3.  Homework: There will be self-study between workshops with relevant readings\, videos etc. \nCommitment \nApplicants are making a psychological “contract” to themselves\, their peers\, and senior management.  Learning is hard work and requires full commitment.  People have different learning styles and needs; this program asks you to coach and work with peers\, experiment with new behaviors on the job\, and be open to learning more about yourself.  We understand that this is a meaningful commitment to make\, and we are confident that you will learn and grow significantly by participating in MLP II. \nThank you. \nHolly \nMLP II Application
