SUMMARY:Appellate Mentor Training
DESCRIPTION:Appellate Feedback Training\nThis free training is invitation only \nThursday 6/3/21 10AM – 12:30PM\nThursday 6/10/21 10AM – 12PM \nProviding feedback on appellate writing can be a challenge.  Where do I start?  How do I express my critiques in a productive yet supportive way?  How can I do this most efficiently and effectively? \nThis two-part virtual training will provide private counsel mentors and staff supervisors with strategies for how and when to give helpful feedback on appellate briefs.  The first day includes a hands-on session led by Suffolk Law School Professor Kathleen Vinson (https://www.suffolk.edu/academics/faculty/k/v/kvinson).  Between sessions\, attendees will be asked to critique a very short mock brief.  On the second day\, attendees will learn best practices for providing oral and written feedback\, and then work in pairs to practice providing oral feedback on that mock brief.  The training will conclude with a panel of private counsel appellate mentors\, where attendees can share common mentoring challenges and solutions. \nPlease contact your appellate panel director with any questions.

SUMMARY:The Stress of Injustice: A Conversation with the Authors of a New Study on Public Defenders
DESCRIPTION:There is no question that working in public defense is stressful\, but what is the greatest stressor for us? The authors interviewed 87 public defenders across the country and found that the social and psychological demands of working in a punitive system with laws and practices that target and punish those who are the most disadvantaged is the greatest stressor. They define this as the stress of injustice. During this session\, the authors will discuss their findings and the shifts in the American legal system that they think have the greatest impact. We will then break into small groups for discussion on how these findings relate to our work. \n1.5 CLE: Mental Health\, Adult Criminal\, Criminal Appeals\, CAFL\, YAD\, YAD Appeals \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Adoption of Luc Webinar – Attend either May 5 or May 25\, 2:00 – 4:00
DESCRIPTION:Join us in May for an Interactive Training on the SJC’s Decision in Adoption of Luc \nIt is now over a year since the SJC’s decision in Adoption of Luc changed the legal landscape around the admission of DCF records.  Hearsay is in!  (Or is it?)  Opinion is out!  Come learn what the decision means for your practice.  Our evidence expert Andy Cohen\, Director of the CAFL Appellate Panel and author of CPCS’s amicus brief in Luc\, will review the decision and how it has changed the rules about admission of DCF records. Senior Trial Counsel Victoria Bleier and Nancy Hathaway will provide practice tips and lead a discussion about how local courts are applying the decision.  We will break into small groups to share our experiences and brainstorm strategies for protecting our clients’ rights and challenging unlawful practices. \nWe are offering the training on two separate dates to accommodate busy court schedules: \nRegister in advance for the May 5\, 2021 session: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAlce6upzIiHNfhqv7–65zyVyGvdAEml4X \nRegister in advance for the May 25\, 2021 session: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUucuippz8pHNMTb7691A2MX5CCLJvfQ-83 \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Please send any questions or concerns you have about the admission of DCF records to cafltraining@publiccounsel.net and put “Adoption of Luc” in the subject line so we can best prepare to respond to local practices.  Approved for 2 CAFL CLEs. \n
