The Stress of Injustice: A Conversation with the Authors of a New Study on Public Defenders
There is no question that working in public defense is stressful, but what is the greatest stressor for us? The authors interviewed 87 public defenders across the country and found that the social and psychological demands of working in a punitive system with laws and practices that target and punish those who are the most disadvantaged is the greatest stressor. They define this as the stress of injustice. During this session, the authors will discuss their findings and the shifts in the American legal system that they think have the greatest impact. We will then break into small groups for discussion on how these findings relate to our work.
