Understanding The Science and Practice of AntiRacism for Mental Health Lawyers
February 5, 2021 @ 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm
The CPCS Mental Health Litigation Division training unit presents this important webinar to lay the foundation and give us a common language and understanding of mechanisms of racism that affect us and our clients. The webinar will offer orienting language on race and racism, outline specific manifestations of racism within mental health systems and offer a practical tool for illuminating mechanisms of racism with institutions using a small group exercise.
We are excited to have Dr. Jessica Isom, MD MPH, board-certified community psychiatrist at Codman Square Health Center in Boston and Clinical Instructor in the Yale University Department of Psychiatry, and Dr. Ayala Danzig, MD, Psychiatry Resident at Yale New Haven Hospital, to help us learn about and discuss important subjects like:
How is race and racism best defined in the 21st century?
To what extent is structural racism a component of the mental health system?
How might racism impact patients before, during and after clinical encounters?
How does racial anxiety and stereotype threat impact interracial relatedness in health care settings and beyond?
How might racism and racial anxiety affect how our clients get involved in the mental health system, how they are treated by healthcare professionals, resources available in the community, and whether they seek out treatment as a consequence?
How we are able to effectively advocate for our clients of color when their cases go to trial?
What are some of the first steps for successfully and intentionally becoming anti-racist advocates for our mental health clients?
