CPCS in the News – Deputy Chief Randy Gioia Testifies Against the Proposed Dangerousness Bill

On May 14, 2019, the Joint Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing on the Governor’s bill, H.66, “An Act to protect the Commonwealth from dangerous person’s”. Deputy Chief Randy Gioia left the Annual Conference early to testify in opposition to this bill. After the Governor’s sensationalistic testimony, Randy calmly, but passionately, reminded the committee that last session the Commonwealth enacted a major criminal justice reform package. He testified that the reform package was designed to change the way we look at criminal justice with an emphasis on diversion and rehabilitation, and this bill was a huge step in the opposite direction by drastically expanding the length of time and number of people that would be incarcerated pre-trial without bail. Randy was joined in our opposition by the ACLU, Citizens for Juvenile Justice, MACDL, Jobs Not Jails and many individual citizens. See below for the press coverage.
