There are two methods to capture an image of your screen on a Windows PC:
- Uses the Print Screen button (sometimes shown as PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn)
- Only on Windows 10 machines, use the Windows Key- Shift-S combination.
Method #1: Using the PRINT SCREEN key
Pressing PRINT SCREEN captures an image of your entire screen and copies it to the Clipboard in your computer’s memory. You can then paste (CTRL+V) the image into a document, email or other file.
Where is the PRINT SCREEN button?
The PRINT SCREEN key is usually located in the upper right corner of your keyboard and looks similar to the following:
The text you see on your keyboard might be Print Screen, PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn.
Copy only the image of the active window
The active window is the window that you are currently working in. Only one window can be active at a time.
- Click the window that you want to copy
- Press ALT+PRINT SCREEN
- Paste (CTRL+V) the image into an Office program or other application
Copy the entire image on the screen
- Open everything you want to copy and position it the way you want
- Press PRINT SCREEN
- Paste (CTRL+V) the image into an Office program or other application
Method #2: Windows 10-only using Windows Key-Shift-S combination
Press Winkey + Shift + S. The screen will be covered with an overlay and the mouse cursor turns into a plus (+) symbol, which indicate that the capture mode is on.
You’ll see the following bar at the top. From there, choose one of the snipping modes: Rectangular snip (default), Freeform snip, or Fullscreen snip.
If you choose Rectangular or Freeform snip, select a region on the screen. This copies that particular portion
Paste (CTRL+V) the image into an Office program or other application (like email).
