Hats Off to Two CPCS Staff Attorneys for Being Named Mass Lawyers Weekly 2017 Lawyers of the Year
Congratulations to Atty. Emma Winger and Atty. Lisa Kavanaugh for being among those honored by Mass Lawyers Weekly as Lawyers of the Year – 2017.
Attorney Emma Winger, a lawyer with the CPCS Immigration Impact Unit (IIU), is being recognized by Mass Lawyers Weekly for her incredible win before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) in Sreynuon Lunn vs. Commonwealth & another, 477 Mass. 517, (2017). In this momentous case, the Court held that “Massachusetts law provides no authority for Massachusetts court officers to arrest and hold an individual solely on the basis of a Federal civil immigration detainer, beyond the time that the individual would otherwise be entitled to be released from State custody.”
Attorney Lisa Kavanaugh, Director of the CPCS Innocence Program, is no stranger to accolades for her outstanding work litigating innocence cases, so it’s no surprise that Mass Lawyers Weekly is honoring her as one of 2017’s Lawyers of the Year. She and Atty. Jeffrey G. Harris of Good, Schneider, Cormier & Fried have made the list together for their work on the August 2017 exoneration of Frederick Clay. Clay was 16 years old when he was arrested and held for the 1979 murder of a Boston cab driver. He was subsequently convicted, but was released from prison after 38 years because of the tireless efforts of the two lawyers. As Kavanaugh points out in her Mass Lawyers Weekly interview, the importance of Clay’s exoneration is that it is “the first and only time that the Suffolk DA’s Office has agreed to an exoneration in a non-DNA case.”
