TL:DR – Keep you file names and directory names short or else you may have problems.
IT receives many helpdesk calls from staff that can’t save files or have problems opening files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) on the network. The #1 cause for this is the combined length of file names and directory names.
Computers have a restriction on the number of characters (letters, numbers, spaces, etc.) that can be used. The restriction is a maximum of 244 characters. This is a technological limitation of the operating system and not one imposed by CPCS. <This paragraph is about 244 characters – so that is a LOT of characters you can use. >
If you use a directory path and file name longer than that, you may not be able to save, edit or open a file. You will have to call IT to rectify the issue, which is a pain for everyone involved.
People like to have long, descriptive file names. In conjunction with long file paths, this can get you into trouble. So, let’s keep it short.
