Prisoners’ Legal Services of Massachusetts (PLS) has published an informational sheet for attorneys who may be representing pregnant women who are incarcerated. In May 2014, the Massachusetts Legislature enacted a law that banned the shackling of pregnant inmates (G.L. c. 127 s.118). PLS has a started a project to monitor the implementation of the anti-shacking law. You can help insure that the law is a success by contacting PLS, with your client’s permission, if you are aware of a pregnant incarcerated woman who may need the help of PLS.
