Family & Medical Leave

Family & Medical Leave:
Information and Procedures

Understanding and utilizing these leave benefits ensures employees maintain a healthy work-life balance. This initiative reflects our commitment to employee well-being and job satisfaction.

HR Benefits video: This short video provides CPCS Employees with an overview of Leave Benefits.

To better serve our CPCS employees, Human Resources would like to remind you of the key provisions of our Leave of Absence policy, which includes Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave.  For more information, please review Section 3 of the CPCS Personnel Policies Manual at the link in the right-hand column.

Below is a copy of Employee Rights and Responsibilities Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, as summarized by the U.S. Department of Labor.  FMLA is technically an unpaid leave benefit for up to 12 weeks a year for the designated medical, childbirth, or adoption reasons and up to 26 weeks in a year for a covered service member.  CPCS requires employees with applicable accrued leave benefits to use them concurrently with FMLA Leave before taking an unpaid leave of absence.

Notice Requirements

We ask all employees and office heads to submit leave requests on a timely basis.  Our Leave policy states:

Except where the need for a leave is not reasonable foreseeable, no request for leave of absence (LOA) shall be made less than thirty (30) days prior to the commencement of the leave.  Failure to comply with this requirement may result in denial of the leave.

If leave is not foreseeable (e.g., an emergency), the initial leave request must be submitted to HR within 3 days of the incident date, and the medical certification must be submitted to HR within 15 calendar days.

Application Process

Below are each party’s established responsibilities in the FMLA application process.  All forms should be submitted to the benefits team in the HR department.
