Public Service Loan Forgiveness
The PSLF Program was established to encourage individuals to enter and continue in full-time public service employment by forgiving the remaining balance of their Direct Loans after they have made 120 qualifying payments after October 1, 2007, under specific repayment plans while employed by a public service organization.
The first thing employees should do prior to completing the certification for the Loan Forgiveness Program is check if they have qualifying loan(s). If you have a qualifying loan(s) employees will need to fill out the Employment Certification Form (ECF). The ECF can also be found on the student aid website Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) & Temporary Expanded PSLF (TEPSLF) Certification & Application (studentaid.gov)
Qualifying Loan Types:
- Direct Subsidized Loans
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans (including TEACH Grants that were converted to Direct Unsubsidized Loans)
- Direct PLUS Loans for graduate or professional students
- Direct Consolidation Loans (including Special Direct Consolidation Loans)
Employees can email the employer portion (page2) of the certification to the HR inbox at [email protected] to complete. The certification will be sent back to the employee once complete to be sent to MOHELA, who is the current loan servicer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). It is recommended that employees complete the certification annually so any qualifying payments made during a specific period can be updated and counted towards the total 120 qualifying payments needed to qualify for forgiveness.
Feel free to reach out to a MOHELA Public Service Loan Forgiveness specialist at 855-265-4038 for any additional questions or concerns you may have.
